What shall I write about?

OK, I need to create a first blog post, just so we can check out the format and launch my new website without the blog section being empty. No problem, knock up a quick 400 words – you’re a writer, get on with it.

Here we go, easy peasy, and….. uh, what am I going to write about?

I have 100 things I’ve wanted to write about for ages. I even have a board on Trello where I store my blog post ideas… in categories. But which one makes sense for a first blog post on my personal website? I don’t want to scare people away with a radical rant too early. But then again, probably no one is reading this first post, so I could just tell you what I had for lunch.*

I know at least one person who will be saying, “just get AI to write something for you”. Mmm, no, we’ll come back to the ‘AI and me’ topic in a later post.

I could borrow a blog entry I previously wrote for EENET. That would fill the space quickly.

Nah, I want to keep this blog separate from EENET’s. Besides, I’ve never been a fan of the academic ‘recycle-the-same-article-and-publish-it-in-a-dozen-different-journals’ approach.

Shall I tell you about my horses?

No? OK, let’s Google ‘What shall I write about?’.

Great, there’s a webpage listing 100 things to write about, which I can add to my existing list of 100 things to write about. Thanks to this new list, I bet you can’t wait to read the story of when I was sick as a child or my analysis of which 1970s TV programmes they should bring back.

How much more do I need to write? OMG, Google says the average blog post is 1,400 words. No way, I’ve not got time for that today.

I could just quickly tell you about the horses…

What?! I just saw that some bloggers are adding a button that confirms their blog was written by a human. I’m not doing that. You can be certain everything I write is 100% my own waffle. My brain, my weirdness, my typos.

Are you sure you don’t want to hear about the horses?

* In an unexpected twist, I haven’t had my lunch yet.
